proust magazine

When my friend asked me to help her bring her vision of a student lifestyle magazine to life, little did she know that I had that same dream myself.  Without hesitation, I said “yes!”. It turned out to be the most valuable yes of my college career.

In my first year with Proust Magazine, as the Photo Editor, I photographed the covers, hired additional photographers, contributed to the story-building process and brainstormed for potential content. During my second year, as Creative Director, I collaborated closely with the Art Director. We designed spreads and style guides, directed cover shoots and took photos as needed. We also placed content into the InDesign document and ran Proust’s Instagram account.

We all worked well together. We held both staff and design team meetings weekly. We held events and sold ads to pay the printing costs. We put so much time, thought and care into the magazine because we were passionate about creating something that neither JMU nor the Harrisonburg community offered: an appealing lifestyle magazine that you couldn’t put down. In a society where many claim print is dying, we provided the luxury of a printed product. Thus the slogan, “Keeping Print Alive.”

Co-Launching this magazine has been the highlight of my college career. Collaborating with other creative minds, has confirmed, for me, what I am passionate about. I look forward to a position in the workplace that allows me to further develop my leadership, creative and collaborative skills.
